  • BRIEF SCOPE OF SERVICES – PART I AND PART II

  • PART I:          SCOPE OF SERVICES AND PROJECT BRIEF FOR RA-ZU CHEMICAL EOR PILOT PROJECT IMPLEMENTATION

Kuwait Oil Company (KOC / Company) is intends to implement Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) technologies at a countrywide level, whenever it is a technically and commercially viable. Potential reservoir candidates were studied in detail and suitable EOR technologies were identified for each of these reservoirs. For one of the reservoirs, Raudhatain-Zubair (RA-ZU), alkali-surfactant-polymer (ASP) is identified as the most suitable EOR method. Laboratory experiments were conducted on outcrop Bentheimer and RA-ZU core plugs and were flooded with most suitable chemicals for enhanced oil recovery and the recorded results are promising. Following the success of the experiments in the laboratory, the efficacy of the ASP formulation was further demonstrated via implementation of a successful Single Well Chemical Tracer (SWCT) Test in the field. Now the Company is intending to conduct a multi-well EOR pilot to confirm previously obtained results in preparation for commercial deployment.

Prior to chemical injection, a softened seawater injection phase will be performed to reduce the high in-situ brine salinity and, in particular, the very high divalent ion concentration to manageable levels. This will pre-condition the reservoir and make it amenable to ASP slug and polymer drive injection. The Contractor will carry out a pre-flush injection phase using softened water at a maximum rate of 3000 BWPD over a period of 1-2 years prior to the ASP slug injection. The main criterion to stop the pre-flush water injection phase is to get divalent ion concentration to levels that can be mitigated via use of commercially available scale inhibitors prior to ASP injection.

The scope of the Pilot is to conduct a successful turnkey inverted 5-spot ASP pilot project [four (4) surrounding producers, one (1) central injector well, one (1) logging observation well and one (1) sampling observation well, within an area of approximately 2.1 acres] in RA-ZU in North Kuwait with minimal impact on the existing field operations (see Figure 1). The Contractor with relevant chemical mixing and injection experience shall perform detailed engineering, construction, installation, and operation of a fit-for-purpose plant by the specified target date. This plant can be skid mounted and the successful Contractor shall assemble, install & commission, operate and maintain the plants at the designated location.

The duration of the envisioned project is three (3) years. The Company will not recognize incremental costs related to the extension of the pilot duration, if low productivity or observation wells malfunctioning is caused by the inappropriate operational procedures that are within the scope and control of the Contractor.

From lab testing and initial pilot design (notional), the figures and only the selected chemical and formulations shall be implemented for the pilot (all pilot stages), unless further instructed by the Company (refer to ANNEXURE 4).

  • The scope of the services (Services) are further described in Appendix IA, and shall include but not limited to the following:

  • Upfront tasks: conduct and deliver fit-for-purpose: (1) Detailed engineering and design of the Pilot installations and equipment, (2) Integrated monitoring-surveillance plan with monitoring equipment and (3) Pilot Operating Philosophy. The final location of fit-for-purpose surface facilities defined by the Contractor will be finalized in consultation with KOC upon awarding the contract.

  • Deliver the fit-for-purpose water treatment facility (one or several skids) including the required units (filtration, softening, etc.), using the source water provided by KOC. The distance from pilot wells to the water supply source is approximately 1100 m. The Contractor can select fit-for-purpose designs while providing the associated cost breakdown ensuring softened seawater specifications are met.
  •
  • Procure and Deliver the selected chemicals (according to their specifications) in the assigned chemical storage warehouse. The Chemical warehouse dedicated to the EOR pilot, with Temperature and Humidity requirements and environmental condition, must be as per the chemical Manufacturer's instruction and is in the scope of the Contractor
  •
  • Ensure all operations are carried out as per KOC standards or international industry standards such as API, the International Oil & Gas Producers (IOGP) or equivalent standards.

  • Decommissioning of Pilot facilities and site remediation, as required.

  • Deliver the fit-for-purpose chemical storage facility at the pilot location.
  •
  • Deliver the fit-for-purpose new or used chemical mixing/injection and water treatment facilities, with an operational life of 5 years, in compliance with KOC or international industry standards such as API, the International Oil & Gas Producers (IOGP) or equivalent standards. The pilot fit-for-purpose facilities shall be used to perform the mixing of ASP chemicals and chemical additives (biocide, oxygen scavenger, etc.) in the proper order. The recommended strategy / procedure for blending the chemicals should be case-specific.

On the Pilot Injection side, the Contractor's piping scope includes connecting the seawater source from the above-mentioned RA-0171 tie-in point with the softening system beyond which the Contract shall route softened water and pilot injectants as per the recommended injection sequence towards the central pilot injector.

  • Provide fit-for-purpose lab facilities and adequate online meters and sampling points along the chemical processing to quality check all the EOR fluids, on a continuous basis before injection. Quality controlling the pilot chemicals will be done by the Contractor. The Company may at its sole decision may instruct to get it verified by an approved third-party the cost of which shall be deemed included in the Contract Price.
  •
  • The Contractor shall design, perform and interpret results of an Inter Well Tracer Test campaign to evaluate reservoir conformance during the pre-flush phase as well as oil saturation within the pilot area before and after the polymer drive phase. Subsurface logging and well intervention will be covered by the Company as needed.
  •
  • Procure and deliver adequate low shear pumps to minimize polymer degradation and must be capable of injecting up to 2000 bbls/day into the injector well. The pump feed strategy must be clearly explained. Redundancy plans using especially, but not only, spare pumps to ensure continuous injection operations are required.
  •
  • Provide adequate fluid flow metering (rate, composition) at each injection wells and at the four producers (multi-phase flow metering) in addition to one 3-phase test separator to cross-check rates and composition of produced fluids for each producer.
  •
  • Provide an efficient and fit-for-purpose produced fluid handling facilities to separate oil, gas and produced water and to route the produced fluids to GC-25.
